Save Water, Save Power: Simple Habits for Everyday Life

Water and energy are essentials of life. Every time we are cooking, cleaning, keeping a comfortable indoor temperature, or lighting up the interior of our homes, we are using water and energy. Water and energy are finite resources, and both are wasteful to use and harmful to the world, and they will cost us more on our household bills. Best of all, we don’t need to do anything extraordinary to save water and energy. Just simple, constant practices in everyday life can save both water and energy.

Save Water, Save Power

1. Water is a Scarce Resource

Water is life, and conserving it starts with simple habit changes at home. Fix leaks immediately as even the smallest drip from a tap can potentially waste hundreds of liters each month. Turn taps off when they are not needed, like while brushing your teeth or washing vegetables. Reuse water for gardening or cleaning. In short, make every drop count.

2. Reduce Your Electricity Use Daily

Electricity powers everything we do almost anywhere, but even small changes at home can cut down on your use. Turn off the lights and appliances in your home when you don’t need them. Even if a charger is plugged into the wall but not charging a device, it’s wasting energy and should be unplugged. Switch lamps and appliances to energy-efficient bulbs whenever possible, as they consume less power and last longer. Open the curtains for natural light instead of turning on the lamp during the day.

3. Mindful Practices in the Kitchen

The kitchen utilizes more water and electricity than any other space. Instead of letting water continuously run, soak vegetables or dishes. Wash the dishes all at once to help save water, electricity, and your energy. Cooking efficiently can lower your electricity consumption; use a pressure cooker or cover pots when cooking.

4. Make Your Home Energy-Efficient

Your home uses most of your electricity. Even small adjustments can mean a lot. Use smart lighting or timers so that lights are only on when you need them. Ongoing maintenance of appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners can also improve energy efficiency. If possible, use renewable energy such as solar energy to reduce your reliance on the grid.

5. Build Endeavors That Last

Water and electricity savings work best when they become a part of your day-to-day routine. Show family and friends that they can turn off the tap or lights when not in use. Follow-up on your consumption so you see patterns that can help you lower your consumption. Share ideas among friends and family about saving water and electricity. You might even be able to work together as a group to push for water and energy conservation in your community.
