Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was a courageous and intelligent warrior who played a key role in defending the Maratha Empire.
He was born on 14 May 1657 at Purandar Fort. From a young age, Sambhaji showed remarkable skills in leadership, military strategy, and languages. He was well-educated and fluent in Sanskrit, Persian, and Marathi.
After the death of Shivaji Maharaj in 1680, Sambhaji Maharaj became the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. His reign was marked by continuous battles against the Mughal Empire, led by Emperor Aurangzeb.
Sambhaji refused to surrender and bravely fought for the independence and dignity of the Maratha people. He protected his kingdom from external invasions and tried to unite various forces to resist the Mughal threat.
Sambhaji Maharaj was not just a warrior but also a scholar and poet. He wrote several works in Sanskrit and had a deep respect for knowledge and culture. Despite facing many challenges, he never lost his courage or faith in his people.
In 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was captured by the Mughals and brutally tortured for refusing to convert to Islam. He chose to die rather than betray his religion and nation. His sacrifice became a symbol of pride, bravery, and resistance in Indian history.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is remembered today as a fearless king who gave his life for Swarajya (self-rule). His legacy continues to inspire millions across India, especially in Maharashtra.
