Buddha Purnima: Celebrating the Birth of Enlightenment

Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is the most sacred day for Buddhists across the world. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana), and death (parinirvana) of Lord Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

This auspicious day falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Vaisakha (April–May), making it a triple-blessed day in Buddhist tradition.

Buddha Purnima

Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal) around 563 BCE, he renounced his royal life in search of truth and the cause of human suffering. After years of meditation and ascetic practices, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, and became Buddha, meaning “The Enlightened One.”

Buddha Purnima is observed with great reverence in countries like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Japan. Devotees visit temples, offer flowers, light candles, and chant scriptures.

Many observe non-violence, practice meditation, and engage in charitable acts, reflecting Buddha’s teachings of compassion, peace, and wisdom.

In India, key celebrations take place in Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar, which are significant sites in Buddha’s life. Government and religious organizations often organize processions, seminars, and public discourses on Buddhism.

One of the core messages of Buddha Purnima is to let go of material desires and walk the path of righteousness, mindfulness, and non-attachment. It is not just a festival but a reminder of inner awakening.

Whether through reflection, prayer, or service, Buddha Purnima encourages people of all faiths to embrace peace, kindness, and spiritual growth.
