Maharishi Valmiki was previously known as Ratnakar, a hunter and robber in the forest. His story of change from darkness, to becoming a sage is one of the most beautiful uplifting stories in the Indian tradition and culture.
It is said that there was one day that Ratnakar, while he was in the process of stealing from sage Narada, was directed to discover truth instead of sin. Ratnakar listened to Narada’s directions to him. He was directed to go into a deep meditative state while chanting the name of Lord Rama.
After many years of penance, Ratnakar emerged as Maharishi Valmiki, fully pure, wise and a divine soul. His story is an illustration of the possibilities of another person – easy and at our own pace ease into daliy repentance, knowledge and faith.
Valmiki: The Adi Kavi (First Poet)
Maharishi Valmiki is known as the first poet of India—the Adi Kavi. Valmiki composed the Ramayana, one of the world’s oldest and most honored epics, consisting of about 24,000 verses. The Ramayana tells the story of the life, character, and mission of Lord Rama, exemplifying many values such as truth, duty, loyalty, dedication, and compassion.
Valmiki’s poetic imagination is the source of India’s most enduring story, as well as the basis of Sanskrit literature. Valmiki’s verses are known for their cadence, emotional range, and moral strength. Valmiki’s work changed the act of storytelling into the journey of spiritual awakening.

Visiting temples named after the sage to pray and hear sections of the Ramayana are staples of the days events. Others will schedule festivals, processions, and even community lunches, all in celebration of the sage.
At schools and in the community, people will recite poetry, or invite speakers to give lectures, or simply sing devotional songs, all with the goal of educating the community about the values contained in the teachings of Valmiki; namely, values related to peace and rectitude. Statues of Maharishi Valmiki are often ceremoniously adorned with flowers, and lights and lamps may be lit to symbolize the triumph of wisdom over ignorance.
For followers of Maharishi Valmiki, this day is thought to be a day of celebration, but more importantly, it is an opportunity and reminder to live a morally and ethically integrative, community-oriented life.

Maharishi Valmiki’s teachings are more relevant than every today, as we live in the fast-paced world of new technology, where everything is new and changing. In his life, he reminds us that those transformations start from within. As Ratnakar transformed to Valmiki with reflection and remorse, society also can transform itself from violence and wantonness to truthfulness and loving-kindness.
The Ramayana continues to inspire millions today. The characters of Lord Rama, Sita, Hanuman, and others are embodiments of human values that resonate throughout time. Valmiki’s frame of reference of life calls us to act calmly during trying times, act honestly, and act with kind-heartedness.
