A New Emphasis on Health and Wellness

Previously, safety and environmental concerns often outweighed health concerns related to EHS programs before the pandemic. Now, health—especially public health and mental health—has moved to the forefront of these programs.

EHS professionals are now faced with the challenge of creating protocols to protect employees from future infectious diseases, deal with indoor air quality, and improve mental health.

This includes a flexible approach to health protocols, encouraging vaccinations, and supporting a good work-life balance in hybrid work environments.

Enhancing Emergency Preparedness

The pandemic highlighted weaknesses in many organizations’ emergency response plans. EHS professionals have been developing ways to enhance their business continuity and crisis management strategies.

Emergency preparedness now means planning for natural disasters, chemical spill incidents and biohazards, pandemics, and extended events. Risk assessments, scenario planning, and employee training are now important elements in their toolbox.

Cultivating a Safety Culture

A strong safety culture has been identified as a fundamental contributor to how well many organizations dealt with the pandemic. EHS professionals are now continuing their work to embed safety into the company culture at all levels.

This includes improving communications, working with employee engagement, and fostering trust so employees feel supported in communicating hazards or health issues.

Promoting Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

Climate change, dwindling resources, and pollution are fundamentally global challenges. In recovery from the pandemic, many companies are looking to build back better and more sustainably.

ESH professionals are front and center in asking companies to reduce carbon footprints, manage waste, and be compliant with environmental regulations.

They are also critical in generating sustainability goals and wider ESG standards.

Utilizing Technology and Innovation

From providing safety training digitally to utilizing AI for risk assessments, EHS practitioners are employing technology to execute their responsibilities more efficiently.

The pandemic has expedited the use of digital tools, and today virtual audits, remote monitoring, and analytics are commonplace in EHS practice. By utilizing innovation, EHS professionals can improve their performance, efficiency, and reporting capabilities.
