What are Natural Resources?
Natural resources are materials, or substances derived from nature, that humans utilize to survive and develop. Natural resources can be broken into two categories:
Renewable resources – resources such as solar, wind, water, or timber that revert to their original condition in nature over time.
Non-renewable resources – limited resources like coal, oil, natural gas, and minerals that are no longer available in nature when depleted.
Renewable resources can recover, but overuse or pollution can make those resources limited. Non-renewable resources, as the name indicated, will never recover when used too quickly.
Reasons Why Resources Are vanishing
There are many reasons Earth’s resources are being depleted at an alarming rate:
- Over Consumption: A larger population and the industrial revolution has created increased energy, water, and raw materials vs. the planet can provide sustainably.
- Deforestation and Land Degradation: Clearing forests for agriculture, urban expansion, and logging leads to habitat destruction and limits natural recapture.
- Pollution: Polluted air, soil, and water also renders many resources untenable or toxic.
- Unsustainable Mining and Drilling: Over-drilling and mining of coal, oil, and minerals can tax the environment, and ultimately drain these resources.
Consequences Impacting Our Planet
The depletion of resources impact humans, animals, and the environment:
- Water Shortages: Overuse and pollution has led to a shortage for drinking public health, agriculture, and industry.
- Energy Crisis: Reliance on fossil fuels continues to make us susceptible to instability in energy supplies and prices.
- Climate Disruption: Deforestation and carbon emissions made global warming worse, and lead to extreme weather events.
- The Loss of Biodiversity: Habitat destruction drives many plant and animal species to extinction, and places ecosystems under stress.
Steps We Can Take
Consciously acting at the human, household, rural community, and government level is critical in protecting Earth’s resources.
- Conserve Water: Leaks in your home can cost you. Harvest rainwater. You can also practice conservation by not wasting water-that means not leaving the faucet running while brushing teeth, and so on.
- Adopt Renewable Energy: You can go green in your household with solar, wind, or even hydroelectric energy instead of fossil fuels.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Reducing waste, reusing things, or using sustainable products when you must buy something is what we can all do.
- Afforestation: Planting trees can replenish the ecosystem and help mitigate climate change.
- Spread the Word: Help others in your community understand that adopting sustainable practices is incredibly important.
The Policy and Industry Role
The government and industry must also start doing something to ensure the responsible use of Earth resources:
- Create incentive programs that promote the adoption of renewable energy.
- Place strict pollution and deforestation controls in place, and then hold industries and governments accountable.
- Educate the public about technology, products, and materials that are best for the Earth.
- Encourage research into alternative energy sources and resource-efficient methods.
Collaborating to Accomplish a Sustainable Future
Natural resource depletion is a worldwide problem. Action taken individually, and collectively with community programs, government policies, and corporate responsibility, can make an impact. Reducing waste, conserving water, planting trees, and supporting sustainable products all contribute to preserving our planet.
Earth has finite resources, but our duty to protect them is limitless. If we act today, we can ensure that while human activity continues now and into the future, nature can thrive.
